Cola... Friend or Foe?
As most of you have probably heard Dan and I are trying to lose weight and get healthy- for appearances, yes, but also for over all good health. We are cola fanatics! Okay that doesn't really go hand in hand with trying to lose weight. We've tried to quit drinking these little pick me ups in a can or bottle, but, have failed everytime.
A friend of Dan's has lost weight and he said the biggest change was exercise of course, but, he switched his beloved Coca-Cola to Coke Zero... so as a little taste test Dan brought home a Coke Zero, Pepsi Next and Dr. Pepper 10. He put the drinks in three different colored cups (thank you Eskimo Joe's to all the cups we take home!) Coke-Zero and Pepsi Next were a close call- I'm sorry to say Dr. Pepper 10 wasn't very good.
Pepsi Next really actually tastes like Pepsi, it has 60 calories in a can but still has a bit of an after taste. Coke Zero, has 0 calories of course. It does have a hint of an after taste but it's so close in flavor to a real Coca-Cola you really don't notice that. Hopefully making a switch and drinking more water will help in our Battle of the Bulge!
Love and Dieting-
Stephanie
If you cut soda altogether, then when you actually get to have one, it's SUCH a treat! :) I'll have a Dr. Pepper every few weeks or so and it's SO good. lol I quit drinking soda (regular & diet) years ago. We just don't keep it in the house, because if we did, I'd drink all of it. Instead, we drink water or make sweet tea (sweetened with stevia now).
ReplyDeleteYou'll be surprised at how easy it is once you do it for a week or so. Also, I don't recommend diet sodas for health reasons because artificial sweeteners can be so awful for you (especially aspartame!) I always say that there is a difference between "diet foods" and "healthy foods". Just because something says low fat or sugar free does not mean it's healthy (in fact, usually it's less healthy than the regular version would be!)
We use butter, not margarine - whole milk, not 2% - everything we buy is the real thing because I feel like it's healthier to moderate real foods then to eat processed foods. But, that's just my opinon!
A good way to shop healthily is to ONLY shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. Don't go down ANY aisles (except maybe to get coffee, spices & stuff for baking) that way all of the processed foods don't tempt you and all of your groceries end up being whole, natural foods!
Whoa, sorry for the book. I seem to have lots of opinions of food! lol
Oh, I forgot to mention - when I do get soda, I try to get soda with real cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Try Mexican cokes or you can get Dublin Dr. Pepper from their website. Pops also has lots of sodas with real sugar. :)
yeah i know. we actually don't eat a lot of processed foods because i cook with fresh ingredients soda is just a guilty pleasure for both of us. this was just a blog for fun, we really drink more water and yes kool-aid... i'm sure that isn't good either but seeing is how i rarely drink and don't do drugs i don't think a glass of kool-aid or soda (diet or otherwise) isn't going to do me much harm.
ReplyDeletep.s. i learned about the outside of the grocery store in culinary school why should i by it frozen or otherwise when i can make it better from scratch and usually cheaper too!!! and i do a lot of our shopping at whole foods so we can get good organic foods!! lol!
